Virtual try-on over Instagram DM

Instagram virtual try-on is a flow that starts with a comment and runs entirely inside direct messages: the shopper comments "try", a bot opens a DM and asks for a selfie, AI renders the garment on them, and the result comes back with a buy link. The shopper installs nothing and never leaves the app.

The flow, step by step

  1. Comment. The shopper writes a trigger word under the product post.
  2. Automatic DM. The bot opens a conversation within seconds and asks for a photo.
  3. Selfie. An ordinary phone photo is enough.
  4. Render. AI places the product on the shopper's own photo.
  5. Delivery. The result arrives in the DM together with a buy link.

Because the whole flow stays inside Instagram, there is no hand-off to a browser — and the hand-off is where most of the drop-off usually happens.

Why a comment is the right trigger

A comment captures interest the merchant already has: that person liked the product enough to engage. Wiring the comment to a try-on converts that interest before it cools. It also raises the post's engagement — the same action works on both the sales and the reach side.

Requirements and setup

Setup takes about ten minutes and needs no engineering: create an account, upload products, connect Instagram, map posts to products.

Requirement: an Instagram Business or Creator account. Personal accounts are not supported because of Instagram API restrictions; converting is free in Instagram's own settings.

The flow runs on Instagram's official API. The bot only replies to conversations a shopper started; it does not send unsolicited messages.

For marketplace sellers

If you sell on a marketplace where you cannot embed a script on the listing page, the Instagram flow is the whole integration: the try-on result is delivered in the DM and the buy link points at your listing. Nothing changes on the marketplace side.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers try on clothes through Instagram DM?

Yes. The shopper comments a trigger word on a product post, a bot opens a DM and asks for a selfie, and AI returns the garment rendered on them together with a buy link. The entire flow stays inside Instagram — no app install, no website visit.

Does it work with a personal Instagram account?

No. Instagram API restrictions mean only Business and Creator accounts are supported. Converting a personal account is free in Instagram settings.

Will this get my account flagged?

The flow uses Instagram's official API and the bot replies only to conversations a shopper initiated by commenting or messaging. It does not send bulk or unsolicited messages.

Can several garments be tried at once?

Yes. Multi-garment outfit try-on renders several pieces together on the same person, so the shopper judges a look rather than one item at a time.

What trigger word starts it?

The default is a simple word like "try", and you can define your own trigger words from the dashboard.
