What is virtual try-on?

Virtual try-on (VTO) is the use of AI to show a garment or accessory on a shopper's own photo. Its purpose is to answer "how does this look on me?" before checkout, so the shopper decides from an image rather than from imagination.

How virtual try-on works

A modern virtual try-on system takes three inputs: the shopper's photo, the product photo, and product context (category, fabric, cut, colour). A generative model combines them into a new image — same person, same pose, same lighting, now wearing the product.

Earlier systems modelled each garment in 3D and dressed an avatar. That required per-product 3D work, which made it expensive, and the result looked rendered rather than photographed. Generative models skip that step: the existing catalogue photo is enough.

Output quality depends as much on the instruction given to the model and the input photo as on the model itself. Identity preservation (the face must not change), fabric drape, garment proportion and lighting coherence are separate axes that each need to be checked.

What it changes for e-commerce

The structural problem of selling apparel online is that the shopper cannot see the product on themselves. A model shot does not close that gap, because the shopper's proportions, skin tone and posture differ.

That uncertainty costs money twice: in carts abandoned by shoppers who were not sure, and in orders placed with the intent to return. The second is usually the more expensive one — round-trip shipping, handling, and reduced resale value all land on the seller.

Virtual try-on moves the uncertainty to before the purchase. How large the effect is depends on the category: it is strongest where fit and drape carry the most uncertainty (dresses, jackets, tailoring) and weakest on one-size or standard-cut basics.

Virtual try-on vs. virtual fitting room

The two terms are used interchangeably. "Virtual fitting room" emphasises the digital counterpart of the in-store changing room; "virtual try-on" names the action itself. In Turkish the same pair exists: sanal kabin and sanal deneme.

What a merchant needs to start

Three things, and setup takes about ten minutes:

Frequently asked questions

Does virtual try-on look realistic?

Because generative models start from the shopper's own photo, the result reads as a photograph rather than an avatar. Realism depends on three things: the quality of the input photo (sharp, well lit, full body), the clarity of the product photo, and how strictly the model is instructed to preserve the person's identity.

Do I need special product photography?

No. Existing catalogue photos are used. On the shopper side nothing special is needed either — an ordinary phone photo is enough.

What happens to the shopper photo?

The photo is processed only to produce the try-on image. Retention and processing terms are set out in the privacy policy, and a shopper can request deletion of their data.

Which product categories does it work for?

Any wearable category: tops, dresses, bottoms, outerwear, tailoring and accessories. The commercial effect is largest where fit uncertainty is highest.

How is this different from an AR try-on filter?

AR filters overlay a graphic on a live camera feed in real time, which works well for glasses or makeup but not for the drape of fabric. Generative virtual try-on produces a still image in which the garment actually falls on the body.
